Crocheted wool yarn
This was my first exploration piece for the Landscapes series, which never reached the stage of completion but was an important stepping stone to the fruition of the following pieces. Consisting mainly of textural stitches, this tapestry is considered two-dimensional, yet has an undeniable depth. Inspired by the surface of the sea, of which ripples and patterns are formed by the wind, I crocheted breaks and peaks from the memories of the frequent ferry rides I took in the Setouchi Inland Sea.
As one knows, the sea is never still on the surface; as such, this piece is never fixed. By kneading at the crocheted fabric with my hands, the tapestry slowly changes, from flatness to high crests, and each stitch slips off each creased edge as a wave might roll.
Some of the shapes are shot as temporary sculptures in a certain condition, much like how each wave has a unique characteristic. With each push or pull, the sea becomes friendly, or menacing; the shape of water defined only by that which holds it.
